Fifth-Wheel / Gooseneck Pin Weight Calculator

Estimate pin weight from loaded trailer weight and see how much truck payload remains after people, cargo and hitch hardware.

Pin weight can consume payload quickly

Use actual loaded pin weight whenever possible rather than relying only on a percentage estimate.

Estimate fifth-wheel or gooseneck payload use

Fifth-wheel and gooseneck trailers place a substantial share of their loaded weight directly over the truck. That pin weight, plus the hitch itself, passengers and cargo, all consume truck payload. This is why payload and rear-axle capacity often deserve as much attention as the headline tow rating.

Worked example

If a loaded fifth wheel weighs 12,000 lb and the pin is estimated at 20%, the truck is carrying about 2,400 lb of pin weight. Add 400 lb of passengers, 150 lb of truck cargo and a 200 lb hitch, and total estimated payload use becomes about 3,150 lb. On a truck rated for 3,200 lb of payload, that leaves only about 50 lb before other payload is considered.

Use a percentage for planning, not final verification

Pin-weight percentage can change with trailer design and loading. Use a realistic estimate while planning, then use actual loaded scale weights when possible. Also compare rear-axle, tire, hitch, GVWR and GCWR limits for the exact truck and trailer.

Do not forget the hitch

A fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch is carried by the truck even before the trailer is connected. Include its installed weight along with passengers, bed cargo and accessories when estimating available payload.

Fifth-wheel pin weight FAQ

What percentage should I use for fifth-wheel pin weight?

For planning, use a realistic estimate based on the trailer and its expected loading. The actual loaded pin weight is better than a generic percentage whenever you can measure it.

Does fifth-wheel pin weight count against payload?

Yes. Pin weight is carried by the truck, along with the hitch, passengers, cargo and other payload.

Can a truck have enough tow rating but not enough payload for a fifth wheel?

Yes. Tow rating and payload are different limits, and fifth-wheel pin weight can use a large portion of a truck's available payload.
