Payload is more than passengers and cargo

How payload adds up when towing
Suppose a truck has a 2,100 lb payload rating and is towing a 7,000 lb loaded travel trailer with an estimated 12% tongue weight. That puts about 840 lb of trailer weight on the truck. Add 400 lb of passengers, 150 lb of cargo and 100 lb of hitch hardware, and the truck is carrying about 1,490 lb against its payload rating, leaving about 610 lb before any other payload is added.
The important part is that trailer weight does not stay entirely on the trailer axles. Tongue or pin weight is carried by the tow vehicle and can become the limiting factor even when the trailer is below the truck's advertised maximum tow rating.
Where to find the numbers
Use the payload rating for your exact truck whenever possible. Check the vehicle certification and tire/loading labels, then compare those values with the manufacturer's documentation for the exact configuration. For trailer weight, use a real loaded scale weight when available rather than relying only on brochure dry weight.
Common payload mistakes
Do not forget passengers, tools, coolers, bed cargo, aftermarket accessories or hitch hardware. Fifth-wheel and gooseneck hitches can be especially important because both the hitch itself and the trailer's pin weight are carried by the truck.
